Interrelationships in BeethovenísL. Poundie Burstein Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, Music Dept., Hunter College, 695 Park Ave., NY, NY, 10021, USA Poundie@aol.com, http://sapientia.hunter.cuny.edu/~music/PoundieBurstein.htm AbstractThere are various striking similarities between the movements of Beethoven's Second Symphony. Most notably, a rare harmonic progression is found at the climax of three of its movements, and a similar event arises the climax of the other movement. These interconnections help foster the feeling that the Symphony unfolds a type of narrative, in which the first two movements seem parodied by the final two. |
